Volunteering is good for the soul. No really, it is. Research shows that volunteering and helping others has a number of positive benefits on both your mental and physical health—and who doesn’t need another reason to smile?
At ÐÜèÔÚÏßÊÓƵ, there is no shortage of volunteer opportunities. With the number of community service hours performed during 2018-19 totaling 24,883 hours, it’s clear that giving back is part of the College’s DNA. In fact, Endicott student community service participation stands at 56%, which is double the national average.
Whether you choose to give back by working in an animal shelter, food pantry, local YMCA, or nursing home, Endicott’s community service partners provide an endless amount of opportunities to get involved.
Here are a few of the many ways volunteering is beneficial.
Improve your mood.
When you help others, you feel happy. There’s a reason why it’s called a “helper’s high,” because after doing a good deed or act of kindness you tend to experience a positive emotional state. While it can be hard to find time between class and extracurricular activities, volunteering can be the best way to boost your mood and de-stress.
Meet people.
When you’re volunteering, you’re not only helping those in need, but you have the opportunity to meet new people and make friends who you’ll likely find that you share common interests with. Getting involved in community service allows you to meet fellow peers who you might not have had the chance to connect with otherwise.
Lend your skillset.
Are you a good writer? Social media savvy? A math wizard? Or just a people person? Most organizations or nonprofits are open to having volunteers lend their expertise, whether that be through marketing, finance needs, or just making people laugh. Lending your skillset to nonprofits or organizations can also be a great way for you to apply your learnings from inside the classroom while also teaching others.
Make a difference.
Regardless of how much or how little time you are able to dedicate to volunteering, you are still contributing and that has an impact. By volunteering, you are leaving things better than when you started, and every little bit truly does make a difference.
