Spanning more than 100 years of creation, Investing in Art: Friends and Family, explores works of modern to contemporary art from the North Shore and Cape Ann. These works on view are from the 熊猫在线视频—Walter J. Manninen Trust, the Cape Ann Museum Permanent Collection, Gloucester, MA; Private Collection of Judith and Mark Cabrey, Gloucester, MA; Unitarian Universalist Church Permanent Collection, Gloucester, MA; and Rockport Art Association & Museum Permanent Collection, Rockport, MA. These remarkable Cape Ann women artists inspired and guided Mr. Walter J. Manninen as he amassed an important personal collection, which has become the core of Endicott’s art collection.

Walter J. Manninen, former banker and President/CEO CFO, current senior business advisor, and major art collector from Rockport was drawn to the work of American artists, women artists, Jewish artists, and artists with ties to Cape Ann and Provincetown. His collection began with turn of the century 20th century pieces; it now spans many decades and genres. Meet Mr. Manninen and two of the artists at the public reception on Thursday, September 27, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

THERESA BERNSTEIN

Theresa Bernstein was born in Cracow in 1890, and has exhibited in every decade of the twentieth century. Women artists of her generation had to struggle just to participate in an exhibition, let alone gain recognition for their work. A contemporary of Georgia O’Keeffe, Bernstein won early fame. In 1919, she married fellow artist William Meyerowitz, whose career she supported, and was careful not to compete with him.

JOY BUELL

Joy Buell has exhibited and worked all over the world and most notably in South America; with additional exhibitions in France, Holland, Cameroon, Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria. In the United States, Buell has spent time in California and Arizona. Her creative genius is not strictly painting but creating outdoor performances. In Mijas, Spain she adapted Ferdinand the Bull into Spanish, working with the villagers, church and Mayor. Needless to say, she is well-traveled, and brings a global perspective to her work.

DEBBIE CLARKE

Gloucester artist Debbie Clarke’s first love was portrait painting. She began painting at age ten in her father’s studio. Clarke’s formal art education began at age 13 under the direction of Gloucester landscape painter Ken Gore. She continued her studies at The Art Institute of Boston in 1977, and independent studies under Boston artists Andy MacMillan, Iso Papo, Jack Kramer, and Conger Metcalf. In addition, Clarke attended The Summer Institute of Art and Theology at Andover Newton Theological School.

MILDRED C. JONES

Mildred C. Jones was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1899. She was a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art where she studied illustration. She then spent two years at the Academie Julian and Academie Colarossi art schools in Paris, France under the tutelage of Henri Royer, a distinguished French portrait and landscape painter. Jones is well known in New England for her portraits, especially those of children.
